MARTIN IVNING “ADOBE PHOTOSHOP CS5 FOR PHOTOGRAPHERS”
I studied and learned photoshop, like most photographers – through separate video tutorials and articles, extracts from forums and books. A huge impetus was given to me by Dan Margulis’s book, which I’m still going to write about, but, unfortunately, it doesn’t fully reveal many of the Photoshop tools, especially the masks, as well as the various filters that I had to meet from additional sources.
This method of learning, of course, leads to gaps in the general understanding of Photoshop. Therefore, I began to look for a reference book that would fill these gaps, having built the overall picture of the work with the program. And she found it in the person of Martin Ewning’s book “Adobe Photoshop CS5 for Photographers”.
The book is a complete and competent tutorial on Photoshop, which today is not enough – count them by fingers. Unlike the “for dummies” manuals, it does not provide a specific processing sequence for a particular case, but tells about tools and methods in general, that it will allow the smart processor to decide which of these tools to use.
A DVD is attached to the book, which also contains several chapters from the textbook and additional materials.
The content of “Adobe Photoshop CS5 for Photographers” has been built in such a way that the photographer finds everything necessary for him. That is, you will not find here a technical description of the tools in alphabetical order – rather, even the tools and methods are divided according to the tasks for which they may be required – for example, for sharpening. The text in the book is generously illustrated so that you do not have additional questions.
In 700 pages and 15 chapters there is all the information necessary for a photographer to work successfully with Photoshop. These are masks, which Dan Margulis says so little about, and color correction, which, by the way, is paid enough attention, and retouch of professional-quality images. An entire chapter is devoted to handling RAW, so from this book you can even learn about some of the techniques for converting photos.
For me, the decisive moment was also the fact that Evening is a practitioner, not a theorist, he has been processing a lot of photos, and has been writing about Photoshop for a very long time, since the appearance of his fifth version. Therefore, the book has been supplemented and processed many times, which again indicates that the information in it is not submitted in raw form. In addition, Evening recently got into the Photoshop Hall of Fame, which once again speaks of his competence.
The content of the book has to get used to. Of course, I would like every chapter to be read as a separate brochure, but here you have to turn to other chapters of the textbook to understand some of the techniques.
And, of course, this is a book for computer-literate. It is designed, of course, not at all geeks, but for average users. For beginners, it will sometimes be difficult to understand what it says. True, computer knowledge today is not such a problem. 🙂
The book gets a solid top five. Everything is described correctly, concisely, laid out on the shelves. If you are a photographer and master Photoshop on various articles and video tutorials – this is exactly what you need to fill in the gaps and systematize knowledge.
